Kiwi actually originated in China, where they are considered a delicacy. They were brought to New Zealand by missionaries in the early 20th century. They were named Chinese Gooseberries. They were introduce to North America in the 60’s. Their new name came in honor of the national bird of New Zealand, the Kiwi. They have a taste reminiscent of strawberries, pineapple and bananas. Their availability is year round. You can refrigerate if desired and they have a shelf life of 5 days refrigerated. You should peel them before eating and enjoy them raw.

The peak of the season in the United States runs from November through May.These are the months when their concentration of nutrients and flavor are highest, and their cost is at its lowest. It is a surprise to learn that Kiwifruit actually contain more vitamin C than an equivalent amount of orange.
